What is Internet Marketing? It consists of both the advertising and the selling goods and services over the internet. This unique form of business is rapidly gaining popularity. There are millions of people buying goods and services over the internet right now. It all started back in the early 1990s as basically as a way of product description, that consisted of only text descriptions. As technology grew, internet
marketing speedily advanced to include photos, images and other rich graphics in advertising products and services. Realizing the huge potential of this being a major way of marketing, dot com companies began opening their virtual doors for business. Contrary to the traditional “brick and mortar” businesses, these e-businesses could now present their goods and services to a rapidly growing
number of consumers, entirely or almost entirely, through the virtual world of the internet.
There are a host of different ways to market on the internet. They include, and certainly are not limited to marketing through blogs, email, article marketing, search engine marketing, including search engine optimization, banner ads,pop-up ads and pay-per-click ads. With other methods constantly being developed. No matter which method is used, its objective is to capture the attention of the target market in different ways. Some may be more effective than others depending on the product or service, the target market, and the strategy and goal of the business marketing itself. Information management, customer service, sales and public relations are all examples of businesses that may use different strategies in internet marketing to be effective. More and more “brick and mortar” businesses are incorporating internet marketing into their overall marketing strategy. But online-only businesses have encountered challenges in the aren of retail sales, an example of business-to-consumer (B2C) marketing, business- to-business (B2B) marketing, and peer-to-peer (P2P) marketing. However, other online-only businesses have ventured into innovative approaches, such as online auctions, sites that allow you to find the best price on what you’re shopping for, and also sites that allow you to name your own price. Affiliate marketing has also emerged, offering marketing solutions to virtually all types of business. These businesses generally receive what is called pay for performance. Now home-based businesses are prosperous due to internet marketing. Marketing online offers many benefits. Consumers can now shop and conduct business from the comfort of their own home, from virtually anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as long as they have a connection to the internet. Partnerships have proven to be very effective on the internet. Efficiency and speed have improved significantly as business and shopping have moved to the internet. Even costs have been dramatically reduced. Another perk is that you rarely have to pay sales tax for merchandise purchased online. Probably the main disadvantage of internet marketing is that internet connections can sometimes be slow or unreliable. Another concern is that of online security. Technology is aggressively seeking solutions to these problems, and is making strides. With the government’s concern and attention identity theft, it is evident that security and reliability will continue to improve.
